White and purple base of Valais blacknose with Lleyn and mule colours 50g

Cumbrian hand processed base of Valais Blacknose with home grown hand dyed mule and Lleyn colours. Base of white valais with accent colours in mule and Lleyn

North of England Mule is a cross-bred sheep sired by a Bluefaced Leicester Tup with a Swaledale very popular in Cumbrian we have 12 of these lovely ladies who have the most beautiful fleece soft fine and slightly curly from their dad and long and plentiful from their mums side. It has a sheen and dyes really well, the length makes it fantastic for spinning, needle felting and wet felting. I use a lot of mule in my background wet felting as the length makes a really tight weave.

Lleyn is a Welsh hill breed from the Lleyn Peninsula, it has recently become more popular with farmers as a good breeding ewe to produce a fat lamb with ease of care. They are amazing mums and have good milk supply. the fleece is good, fine, mid-length and lustrous. I use it most for blending, Lleyn also produces a nice yarn on its own if spun and is particularly good if used for felting and dyes really well. Our flock is mainly Lleyn and I use an awful lot of fleece in my artwork.

Valais blacknose wool is interesting as its durability for the sheep makes it very thick wool to use as a crafter the fleece is stringy, white and fluffy.  As a result they look more like cuddly toys than real animals.  I find it a useful base to card finer wool into like alpaca. Great for locks and very hard-wearing I wouldn’t like a jumper out of it but for crafting it’s great. All my Valais blacknose wool is from the local area most from David who winters sheep with us :)
